    Description

Restore your vintage Tandberg analog tuner!
Factory-fit replacement parts offered by a Tandberg tuner specialist - I sourced and use these parts for my own comprehensive 3000-series tuner overhauls, and have sold many dozens of these kits worldwide. This one has been sold through and relisted many times since I originally started it.
    Note:
the battery type pictured went out of production and is no longer available new, though there is some old stock out there - but it is now aging, which isn't great for a battery with a 10 year shelf life. I am switching to a new version of the battery, still made by Varta but the solder tabs are added in the aftermarket rather than at the factory. They also add shrinkwrap to cover the outer edge of the battery. Same battery spec and installation is the same. I also have an alternative battery solution with a remote-mounted holder that takes a larger, replaceable battery. That allows the battery to be repalced without soldering and also removes it from the PCB area so you don't have to worry about leaks in the future. I'll be updating the listing to show these new battery options shortly.
Short rant: Why buy my kit and not one of the other ones available on eBay? Very simple - I'm the only regular seller here on eBay that specializes in Tandberg audio equipment, as a collector myself and also an experienced tech. As anyone who's met me knows, I have a passion for Tandberg, maybe obsession is a better description. As an example of that obsession, before I got deep into collecting and servicing 3000-series components like these tuners, you couldn't find a suitable battery to replace the original so people were substituting other batteries that didn't fit the original PCB, or had to be glued in etc. Same for the quite unique preset switches Tandberg used in these models, there wasn't a good replacement readily available. Because I value these components very highly and want to see them returned to proper working order, I spent the time to locate and source the best possible replacement parts, which allows me to continue to restore them to my standards as well as making the part kits available here on eBay. Since then, other sellers occasionally try and grab some of that business (low margin business at that) for whatever reason, after working on one or two components themselves - or buying one of my kits and reverse-sourcing the same parts, both of those have happened. The difference between us is I care about these components, and selling the parts here is part of keeping them original and working as well as possible, and the parts sales are a low-margin afterthought, not a source of income. What I make on these kits goes back into restocking the parts, which I buy in bulk and keep in stock and have done for years now.
Rant updated: now you also have the option to spend almost as much () as my lamps/battery kit (now .50, which includes the always-needed memory battery) buying a homemade LED replacement assembly... based on solving an issue that DOES NOT EXIST in the 3000-series tuners. Do LED's run cooler than lamps? Yes. Does it matter in this design? NO! The 3000-series tuner was not built like Marantz receivers and some other vintage audio gear, where the lamps cook the plastic display housing and damage it over time. Same for the meters, they are not exposed to enough heat from the lamps to cause long-term damage. The other seller would know this if he'd actually worked on a lot of these pieces as I have, rather than trying to be an instant expert after servicing one of them (maybe two, who knows - I only know about the one because the owner of that tuner pumped me for technical assistance on repairing it while it was at the other guy's shop - nice, huh?). The other issue is that these massed LED arrays driven by AC flicker where the original lamps do not, and they're electrically noisy, and in my opinion have no place in a tuner with ultra-low distortion performance like the 3001/3001A. But if that's your cup of tea, go ahead. Or, keep your Tandberg more original and for another .50 solve your lighting issues AND battery replacement issues AND get detailed instructions for free with every kit.
You are bidding on a set of 4 lamps and 1 memory battery (see note above about new battery type) as shown in one of the pictures, NOT an entire tuner. You also receive a detailed, illustrated instruction sheet (emailed via pdf) covering installation of the parts in the kit and general repair tips.
Tandberg earned a reputation for building rock-solid, super high-performance stereo receivers & other components in the late 1970’s. These fine audio components were hand-assembled in Norway, and among other things their tuners had sensitivity and noise rejection capabilities equal to some of the finest component tuners made. They had a beautiful sonic quality and were built to last a lifetime.
However, Tandberg ran into financial distress by the end of the decade and was reorganized as a much smaller company, which then launched the 3000 series. Among those more modern, brushed-anodized aluminum models, the 3001 and 3011 were standouts with the 3001A in particular ranking among the finest component tuners ever produced even today.
There are a couple of well-known design flaws with these tuners however. One is that the preset switches collapse internally over time, and have to be replaced or removed in order for the tuner to be operable with the manual tuning knob. I sell replacement preset switches that fit exactly as the originals do without modifying the preset PCB; check my other listings for this kit.
The second flaw is an internal battery used to maintain the preset channel settings when the tuner is disconnected from power. These little rechargeable batteries are soldered to the circuit board, and tend to fail regularly. Tandberg recommended replacement every ten years, and that is probably good advice as they often leak rather badly when they get old (see picture!).
I can now offer a precise replacement part for the original Tandberg memory battery. It meets the electrical specification of the original part, and drops into the PCB as though made for it. Simply unsolder the old battery, clean up any mess it may have left behind, solder the new battery in its place, and the memory function is fully restored - good for another ten years!
    Note:
Although the battery is easy to install, getting to it involves a fair amount of disassembly and care so that you don't damage the tuner, especially the fragile preset switches and 20-something year old solder joints, header connections etc. Although I supply a detailed instruction sheet with the kits now, please do
    not
try and install this battery yourself unless you have good electronics repair skills. By the way, I do not supply solder with this kit for a good reason - it takes a LOT more than just a couple of inches of solder to go through the tuner and fix all of those bad joints. Anyone doing this repair should have a roll on hand anyway!
I also now have in stock the four dial lamps, again these match the original specification exactly and fit precisely into the fuse-style lamp holders. You can access these lamps by loosening two screws and removing two others - nothing could be simpler!
You are bidding on a restoration kit for the 3001/3011 model tuners. The kit includes: (1) NiCd PCB-mount back-up battery, and (4) fuse-style dial lamps. The kit comes complete with detailed directions for replacing the battery & the dial lamps. I installed the battery & lamps on a 3011 tuner today and it went very smoothly. Perfect for returning your classic Tandberg tuner to its original glory.
    Note:
If you are not comfortable installing the parts yourself, I may be able to provide a referral for qualified turn-key service on your tuner including parts replacement and alignment. Please contact me through this listing to confirm whether that option is available.
Comments on one of my other Tandberg lighting kits from a satisfied buyer:
    "It's all pretty now!
Just wanted to let you know that - thanks to you - I got the tuning indicator bulb in this evening and the 2060 is now singing out some beautiful Sunday evening jazz. The job wasn't as hard as I feared it might be. I followed your instructions and everything went together quite nicely."

    handling charges.
I make every effort to find and use the lowest cost shipping method appropriate for your item, and refund surplus shipping paid whenever possible.
    Please remember that selecting the
    lowest cost shipping
    method also
    results in the slowest delivery
    - please do not leave low detailed seller ratings because of this fact! If you need the item faster, Priority Mail is a better choice.
Please contact me if the shipping method you want is not offered in the listing. If that service is available for the particular item, I will revise & resend the invoice.
I am not a full-time eBay merchant, but an experienced vintage audio enthusiast. I put many hours into supporting my customers and listings on eBay but am fitting all of that around a very heavy full-time work schedule. However, I always do my best to ship within the guidelines posted in my listings.
In the case of larger items shipped overseas, USPS Priority is currently the lowest cost service available. DHL & UPS are much, much higher. I will use First Class Mail International where possible but it has a weight cut-off of 4 lbs.
I use recycled packaging materials when I can, because I believe it is the environmentally sound thing to do.
I also use new USPS Priority & other packaging materials to supplement the recycled materials where appropriate.
I’m always very careful to make sure the item being shipped is properly protected regardless of the type of packing materials used.
Please note that 4 star ratings while seemingly above average do not qualify me as an excellent seller by eBay's standards. If you feel that you can’t leave 5 star ratings in any of the four categories, please contact me to resolve whatever issue has caused you to feel that way. I am committed to meeting the highest customer service standards.
Please keep the above in mind when you leave feedback.
If you feel you cannot leave 5 star Detailed Seller Ratings, please contact me
so I can resolve whatever issue you may have. Thank you for viewing my listing!
